Wild Hair and Rainforest Fun: The Crazy Plants Craft

Wild Hair and Rainforest Fun: The Crazy Plants Craft

In the rainforest, the warm sun and frequent rain create the perfect environment for plants to grow at lightning speed. To help our little learners visualize this incredible life cycle, we are bringing the forest floor into the classroom with our Crazy Plants Craft!

This activity is a favorite because it combines a hands-on science lesson with a big dose of silliness. By the time we’re done, your students will have a new “friend” whose green grass “hair” grows a little bit more every single day.

Why We Love the Crazy Plants Craft:

  • Observation Skills: Children get to act like real scientists, checking their pots daily to see if the first sprouts have emerged.

  • Responsibility: Little ones learn the importance of nurturing living things by ensuring their plant receives enough water and sunlight.

  • Personal Connection: Using a photo of the child makes them the star of their own mini-rainforest garden, increasing their engagement with the project.

Materials Needed:

Gather these simple supplies to start your indoor rainforest garden:

  • The Pot: A clear or white plastic cup.

  • The Soil: A bowl of nutrient-rich potting soil.

  • The “Hair” Seeds: Fast-growing grass seed (a “Quick Fix” mix works best!).

  • The Star: A printed photo of your child or student.

  • Tools: School glue, scissors, and a pitcher of water.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Personalize Your Pot:

  • Carefully cut out the photo of the child.

  • Use school glue to attach the photo to the front of the cup so the cup has a face ready for its new “hair”.

2. Add the Foundation:

  • Fill your cup about 3/4 full with the potting soil.

  • Use your fingers to pat it down gently to create a firm bed for the seeds.

3. Plant the “Hair”:

  • Sprinkle a generous layer of grass seed over the top of the soil.

  • Remember: the more seeds you add, the thicker and “crazier” the hair will be!

4. The First Rain:

  • Use your pitcher to give the seeds a gentle “rainstorm”.

  • You want the soil to be damp to the touch, but not completely flooded.

5. Watch it Grow:

  • Place the cup in a sunny spot and watch closely.

  • In just a few days, the grass will sprout, giving your photo-friend a head of tall, green, crazy rainforest hair!

🌞 Final Thoughts

Watching “hair” sprout from a cup is a magical way to bring the science of the rainforest to life. As your child nurtures their plant, they aren’t just making a mess—they are discovering how sunlight, water, and soil work together to create life in one of the most vibrant habitats on Earth.
