Slithering Into the Rainforest: The Egg Carton Snake Craft

Slithering Into the Rainforest: The Egg Carton Snake Craft

In the dense undergrowth of the rainforest, colorful snakes glide through the leaves and climb high into the canopy. To help our little learners explore these fascinating reptiles, we are recycling a household staple into a vibrant Egg Carton Snake!

This project is a fantastic way to teach children about the different layers of the rainforest while letting their creativity shine. By transforming a simple egg carton into a slithering friend, students practice patience and precision as they build their very own rainforest inhabitant.

Why This Craft is Wonderful:

  • Eco-Friendly Creativity: Using recycled materials like egg cartons teaches children how to repurpose items into something new and exciting.

  • Fine Motor Development: Gripping a paintbrush to cover the bumps of the carton and carefully placing small googly eyes builds essential hand-eye coordination.

  • Color Recognition: Choosing bright “warning colors” for their snake is a great bridge to discussing how animals use color to stay safe in the wild.

Materials Needed:

Gather these supplies to start your slithering creation:

  • The Body: A cardboard egg carton (standard or large flat style).

  • The Paint: Brightly colored acrylic paint (like green, yellow, or orange).

  • The Face: Googly eyes and a strip of red construction paper for the tongue.

  • Tools: A sturdy paintbrush, school glue, and safety scissors.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Prepare the Snake’s Body:

  • Start by taking your cardboard egg carton and carefully cutting out a single row of “humps.”

  • Trim the bottom edges so your snake can sit flat and slither smoothly across the rainforest floor.

2. Add the Tongue:

  • Cut a small, thin strip of red construction paper and snip a “V” into the tip to create a forked tongue.

  • Glue the tongue to the bottom of the very first hump. Putting the tongue on now ensures it stays securely in place!

3. Paint Your Snake:

  • Now it’s time for color! Use your paintbrush to cover the entire carton row with vibrant rainforest colors.

  • Once the base color is down, use a different color to add dots or patterns along the snake’s back while the paint is still wet, or wait for it to dry for a crisper look.

4. Give It Sight:

  • For the finishing touch, take your googly eyes and apply a small dot of glue directly to the back of each eye.
  •

  • Carefully press them onto the front hump so your snake can finally see where it’s going!
