Marching Through the Canopy: The Ants in the Rainforest Craft

Marching Through the Canopy: The Ants in the Rainforest Craft

Deep beneath the giant leaves of the rainforest floor, millions of tiny workers are hard at work. To help our little learners understand the busy world of insects, we are creating our very own Spoon Ants!

This craft is a “W”onderful way to introduce basic biology. While we build, we talk about how ants are insects with three distinct body parts, which sets them apart from their eight-legged neighbors—the spiders!

The Insect Body Song

I love using music to help these big scientific words stick! While your children are crafting, try singing this catchy tune together:

(Sung to the tune of “The Wheels on the Bus”)

Head, thorax, abdomen, abdomen, abdomen. Head, thorax, abdomen, and 6 legs for an insect!

A spider has 2 body parts, body parts, body parts. A spider has 2 body parts, and 8 LONG legs!

Why This Craft is Wonderful:

  • Scientific Classification: It’s a hands-on way to visualize the “Head, Thorax, Abdomen” structure.

  • Fine Motor Focus: Wrapping the pipe cleaners to create legs is excellent for strengthening little finger muscles.

  • Creative Reuse: Turning everyday plastic spoons into a rainforest army shows kids that art can be made from anything!

Materials Needed:

Gather these supplies to start your ant colony:

  • The Body: Two plastic spoons and one extra spoon handle (or a craft stick).

  • The Legs: Red pipe cleaners.

  • The Color: Bright red acrylic paint.

  • The Details: Small googly eyes.

  • Tools: A paintbrush, safety scissors, and a hot glue gun (for adult use) or strong tacky glue.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Build the Skeleton:

  • An adult can help snap the handles off two spoons.

  • Glue the two spoon “heads” and a small piece of a handle together in a row to represent the three segments: the head, the thorax, and the abdomen.

2. Paint it Rainforest Red:

  • Cover your entire spoon ant with bright red paint. In the rainforest, many ants are bright colors to warn predators to stay away! Let it dry completely.

3. Give It 6 Legs:

  • Cut your pipe cleaners into three equal lengths.

  • Wrap them around the middle segment (the thorax). Bend the ends down so your ant can “stand” and march across the forest floor.

4. Add the Face:

  • Glue two tiny googly eyes onto the front spoon (the head). Now your ant is ready to scout for food!
