Diving Under the Sea: The Easy Octopus Craft

Diving Under the Sea: The Easy Octopus Craft

Beneath the sparkling blue waves of the ocean lives one of the most intelligent and mysterious creatures of all: the octopus! To help our little learners explore the Ocean Habitat, we are upcycling a simple cardboard tube into this wiggly, violet sea friend.

This project is a favorite in my classroom because it turns “trash into treasure” while helping kids practice their scissor skills and counting.

Why This Craft is Great for Development:

  • Scissor Skills: Cutting the “legs” into the tube is excellent practice for fringe-cutting and hand-eye coordination.

  • Counting to Eight: Once the legs are cut, we count each one to make sure our octopus is ready to swim.

  • Fine Motor Focus: Painting and drawing small details like the mouth helps develop the precise control needed for early writing.

Materials Needed:

Gather these supplies for your underwater masterpiece:

  • The Body: One cardboard tube (toilet paper or paper towel roll).

  • The Color: Violet paint and a paintbrush.

  • The Details: Large googly eyes and a black marker.

  • Tools: Safety scissors and school glue.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Cut the Tentacles:

  • Start with your cardboard tube and use your safety scissors to cut straight lines up the bottom of the tube.

  • Aim to cut almost halfway up the tube, making 8 separate strips to create the octopus’s legs.

2. Add a Splash of Color:

  • Use your paintbrush to cover the entire tube with a beautiful violet paint. Set it aside to dry completely.

3. Open the Legs:

  • Once the paint is dry, use your fingers to gently pull the cut strips outward. This “opens” the legs so your octopus can stand tall on the ocean floor!

4. Create the Face:

  • Glue your big googly eyes onto the top (uncut) part of the tube.

  • Finally, take your black marker and draw a happy, friendly mouth right between the eyes. Your violet octopus is ready for an ocean adventure!
