Beep-Beep! Speed into Fun with this Roadrunner Craft

If you’ve ever walked through the desert, you know that the roadrunner is one of the most exciting birds to spot! With its long tail and speedy legs, this bird is a favorite for children to learn about. This Roadrunner Craft is a “W”onderful way to combine a lesson on desert wildlife with important preschool skills like assembly and coordination.

Why We Love This Roadrunner Craft:

  • Shape Recognition: Children learn how different shapes—like the long beak and the jagged crest—come together to form a recognizable bird.

  • Fine Motor Development: Handling small pieces like the roadrunner’s legs and googly eyes helps refine finger dexterity.

  • Creative Expression: Kids can decide exactly how to angle the wings and tail to make their roadrunner look like it’s mid-sprint!

  • Desert Science: It’s a great jumping-off point to talk about birds that prefer running over flying.

What You’ll Need:

Gather these supplies to start your desert race:

  • The Body: Brown and black construction paper.

  • The Details: Small googly eyes and school glue.

  • Our Secret Ingredient: The Roadrunner Craft Template (see below!).

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Trace and Cut:

  • Use the Roadrunner Craft Template to trace the crest and legs onto black paper, and the body and wings onto brown paper.

  • Carefully cut out each piece.

2. Glue the Beak:

  • Start by attaching the long black beak to the front of the head.

3. Add the Wings:

  • Next, layer the wings onto the side of the body. You can glue them flat or leave the edges loose to give them a bit of “flap” for texture!

4. Attach the Crest:

  • Glue the black jagged crest onto the top of the head to give your roadrunner its signature look.

5. Glue the Legs:

  • Secure the long, sturdy legs to the bottom of the body so your bird is ready to run.

6. Place the Eye:

  • Finally, glue the googly eye onto the head to bring your roadrunner to life!
