Honoring a Hero: George Washington Hat and Wig Craft!

Honoring a Hero: George Washington Hat and Wig Craft!

As we approach Presidents’ Day in February, it is the perfect time to celebrate the leaders who shaped our nation. While we honor many great men, we specifically celebrate George Washington, the 1st President of the United States of America. Often referred to as “The Father of Our Country,” Washington’s legacy of bravery and leadership is a wonderful story to share with young learners.

This hands-on George Washington Hat and Wig Craft allows children to step back in time and imagine what it was like to lead a new nation. By combining a classic tri-corner hat with a soft, “powdered” wig made from batting, kids can literally put themselves in the shoes (and hats!) of a founding father.

Why We Love This Historical Craft:

  • Living History: Helps children connect personally with the story of the first U.S. President.

  • Presidents’ Day Celebration: A fantastic activity for February as we celebrate both Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

  • Tactile Learning: Working with soft batting and sturdy cardstock provides a great sensory experience.

  • Imaginative Play: Once the craft is finished, it becomes a costume piece for historical role-play.

What You’ll Need:

Gather these colonial supplies to begin your journey to the 1700s:

  • The Hat: Sturdy blue cardstock or construction paper.

  • The Wig: White polyester batting or large cotton rolls.

  • The Tie: Red yarn or ribbon to tie the wig.

  • Tools: Stapler, scissors, and a measuring tape to ensure a perfect fit.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Measure and Prep:

  • Use a measuring tape to find the circumference of the child’s head to ensure a perfect fit.

  • Lay out your blue cardstock and white batting.

2. Form the Tri-Corner Hat:

  • Cut your blue cardstock into strips or curved sections.

  • Fold and staple the blue paper into a three-pointed “tri-corner” shape.

3. Prepare the “Powdered” Wig:

  • Take a large section of white batting and roll it into a thick, full shape.

  • Use red yarn or ribbon to tie a bow at the bottom of the batting, creating a colonial-style ponytail.

4. Assemble the Masterpiece:

  • Carefully staple the top of the white batting wig to the inside back rim of the blue hat.

5. Step into History:

  • Place the hat on your little leader’s head and watch them transform into the Father of Our Country!
