Did you know that Earth isn’t the only place with volcanoes? Scientists have discovered massive volcanoes on Mars and even icy ones on distant moons! This Volcano Space Craft is a “blast” for little explorers who want to learn about the fiery side of planetary science while practicing their fine motor skills.
Using a simple paper cup and some bright tissue paper, your child can create an erupting volcano right at the kitchen table. It’s a fantastic addition to a space unit or a lesson on the letter “V.”

Gather these simple materials to start your eruption:
The Base: A paper cup (brown or painted brown to look like a mountain).
The Lava: Orange and red tissue paper strips.
Phonics Label: A small strip of paper that says “Vv Volcano.”
Tools: Child-safe scissors and masking tape or glue.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Follow these easy steps to build your planetary volcano:
1. Prepare the Cup:
- Cover the Cup: First, cut your brown construction paper to fit the height and circumference of your cup. Wrap the paper around the cup and secure it with tape or glue to create the rocky mountain base.
Position: Turn your newly covered paper cup upside down.
Adult Step: Use the tip of your scissors or a small knife to carefully poke a hole or an “X” shape into the bottom of the cup, which now serves as the volcano’s crater.
2. Create the Lava:
Take your orange and red tissue paper and cut them into long, thin strips.
Gather the strips together and thread them halfway through the hole in the top of the cup so they “spill” out like an eruption.
3. Add the Phonics Label:
Tape or glue your “Vv Volcano” label onto the front of the cup. This helps your learner connect the craft to the letter “V.”
4. Final Touches:
Crinkle the tissue paper at the top to give the lava more volume and movement!

Astronomy: Explain that volcanoes on other planets can be much larger than the ones on Earth because there is less gravity to pull the lava down!
Fine Motor Skills: Threading the tissue paper through the small hole is excellent practice for finger dexterity.
