Get Creative: Drawn Base Paper Collage Menorah (Simple Hanukkah Craft!)

Hanukkah crafts are a wonderful way to celebrate the Festival of Lights while nurturing essential preschool and kindergarten skills. This Drawn Base Paper Collage Menorah is a fantastic activity that focuses on line drawing, fine motor control, and creative expression with paper.
Unlike crafts requiring templates, this activity encourages children to draw the basic Menorah shape themselves, building confidence in their drawing skills before adding colorful collage elements. It’s a truly personalized and engaging holiday project!
What You’ll Need:
Gather these simple materials to create your Drawn Base Paper Collage Menorah:
Base: A piece of White Cardstock or sturdy white paper.
Tools: A black marker or crayon for drawing the Menorah base, child-safe scissors (if cutting paper strips), and a glue stick.
Paper Pieces: Assorted colored paper strips, construction paper scraps, patterned paper (like wrapping paper scraps or decorative tape), or even magazine clippings for the candles.
Flames: Small yellow paper cut-outs for the flames (can be pre-cut or cut by children).
Step 1: Draw Your Menorah Base
This step is all about simple line drawing and understanding the Menorah’s structure.
Horizontal Line: Instruct the child to draw a long, straight horizontal line across the bottom third of their paper using a black marker or crayon. This will be the main base of the Menorah.
Vertical Lines: Now, have them draw nine shorter vertical lines upwards from the horizontal line. Encourage them to space these lines out to represent the candle holders.
The Shamash: Remind them that one candle (the Shamash, usually in the middle) is slightly elevated or set apart. They can draw its vertical line a little taller or add a small stem to its base.
Step 2: Create Your Colorful Candles
This is where the collage fun begins, focusing on fine motor skills and creative choice!
Prepare Paper Pieces: Depending on the child’s skill level, they can either use pre-cut paper strips, practice scissor skills by cutting their own strips from colored paper, or even tear small pieces of paper for a mosaic effect. The image shows lovely patterned paper strips, which add great visual interest!
Apply Glue: Apply glue to the back of the first paper strip.
Place the Candles: Have the children carefully glue the paper strips onto each of the vertical lines they drew for the candles. They can choose different colors and patterns for each candle, encouraging creativity and color recognition.
Step 3: Light the Flames
The final touch brings the Menorah to life!
Prepare Flames: Use small yellow paper cut-outs for the flames. Children can cut these themselves if able, or they can be pre-cut.
Apply Glue: Apply a small amount of glue to the top of each paper candle.
Place the Flames: Carefully glue one yellow flame onto the top of each colorful paper candle.
Step 4: Display Your Artwork!
Allow the glue to dry completely before proudly displaying their unique Hanukkah Menorah!

🌱 Learning Connections
Fine Motor Skills: This craft is fantastic for developing Pencil Grip (drawing the base), Scissor Skills (cutting paper strips, if applicable), Tearing Skills (if using torn paper), and Pincer Grasp (picking up and placing small paper pieces with precision).
Pre-Writing Skills: Drawing the straight horizontal and vertical lines for the Menorah base provides excellent practice for pre-writing strokes.
Creativity & Self-Expression: Choosing colors, patterns, and arranging the paper pieces allows for wonderful creative exploration.
Math & Counting: Practice counting to nine as they draw the lines and attach the candles and flames. Discuss the concept of eight days of Hanukkah and the special ninth (Shamash) candle.
Cultural Awareness: Learn about the Hanukkah Menorah, its purpose, and the tradition of lighting candles.
