The ‘Belly and Diaper’ Trick: The Simple Rule to Stop Mixing Up b and d
It’s one of the most common challenges in preschool and kindergarten: mixing up the lowercase letters b and d!
If your four- or five-year-old struggles to remember which way the curve goes, don’t worry—it’s totally normal at this age. Their brains are still developing the visual processing skills needed to tell those mirror-image letters apart.
As a teacher, I’ve started teaching a simple, funny little trick that really does help them remember the difference, and it even helps with identifying the sound, too.
The Secret: Focus on the Face and the Body!
We use the line and then the ‘face’ (the circle) when we look at these letters. We teach the children to imagine the letter is a little person who is always looking toward the word.
Here is the rule you can use at home:
1. The Letter b is for “Belly”
The lowercase b has a belly that sticks out!
Rule: The person is always looking forward, and the b has a big “buh, buh, belly”.
Visual Check: The circle is on the right side.
2. The Letter d is for “Diaper”
The lowercase d has the curve on the back, like a diaper!
Rule: The person is always looking forward, and the d has a “duh, duh, diaper” that goes in the back.
Visual Check: The circle is on the left side.

How to Use the Trick at Home
When your child is reading or writing and says “baba belly” or “diaper,” you know exactly what they are talking about!
Stop and Check: If your child mixes them up, ask them: “Does the face go this way? Is that a belly, or is it a diaper?”
Make it Funny: Kids think it’s kind of funny to talk about the letters having bellies and diapers, and that memory association is what really helps them remember the direction.
Reinforce the Sound: Because the rule uses the sound (buh for belly, duh for diaper), it also helps them connect the visual shape to the correct sound!
This technique gives them a specific, easy-to-recall visual check that is far more effective than simply repeating “the circle goes on the right!” Keep reinforcing this fun rule, and you’ll see those tricky letters fall into place quickly.
